A Summary of NIU Suzuki String Policies and Expectations

YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE STUDIO INDICATES ACCEPTANCE OF THESE POLICIES.

  • Your teacher’s assignments are not just suggestions; they are to be carried out fully in order for your teacher to best foster your child’s ability and deepen trust in the process and discipline of mastery. Find the best method of capturing the lesson details and recreate them in daily practice.

  • These are the cornerstones of the Suzuki approach and they will make the biggest difference in your child’s progress!!!

  • Please arrive a few minutes early so that your child may use the restroom and wash their hands, get settled, and be ready to participate fully in the lesson. Please enter the studio at your lesson time and quietly prepare for your lesson while respectfully observing the end of the lesson before you. You are also welcome to unpack and wait in the hallway if you prefer or if this is the preference of the previous student or

  • In the event that you must miss a lesson please let your teacher know as soon as possible. There are no make-up lessons for student absences so please do not ask for them. Please refer to options for online lessons, parent conferences or lesson time swaps with other agreeable parties on the extended policy form* if needed. If your teacher must cancel a lesson it will be rescheduled at a mutually agreeable time.

  • Mark events on your calendar to include all recitals, workshops and dates when there are no lessons. Please note the “stay to play” policy. Be sure that you and your child can attend the entire recital for the respectful support of everyone involved.

  • We must all err on the side of health and safety for all. See options for missed lessons in the extended policy attachment*

  • Silence all electronics and put them away during your lesson. The exception would include using phones to create practice videos at the appropriate time. Texting, using social media, or receiving phone calls during lessons distract you, your teacher and your child and minimize the lesson’s impact.

  • Email or text messaging are the best ways to contact your teacher. Please email your teacher to set up a conference about sensitive issues rather than discuss them in front of your child. These include questions regarding your child’s progress or insights into your child’s skill development. These issues are not appropriate to discuss in front of your child and should be addressed in a private conversation with your teacher.

  • Bring all of your lesson materials, especially the lesson folder with current planners, the practice notebook, pertinent music books and charged technology to record practice videos, to every lesson.
